Early Orthodontic Intervention

Guiding Healthy Growth From the Start

At Adelaide Orthodontics, Dr Sven Jensen and his team help children develop healthy, confident smiles from an early age. Early intervention allows us to guide jaw growth, create space for adult teeth, and address bite or airway concerns before they start.

What Is Early Orthodontic Intervention?

Early orthodontic intervention refers to assessment and treatment carried out while a child’s jaw and teeth are still developing. Most children benefit from their first orthodontic evaluation around the age of seven.

At this stage, Dr Sven can identify issues such as crossbites, crowding, or jaw discrepancies and recommend simple, proactive solutions. These early measures can reduce the need for more extensive treatment as your child grows.

Correcting Growth &
Alignment Early

Early intervention may involve gentle appliances designed to guide jaw growth and correct developing bite patterns. Common treatments include expanders, growth modification devices, or space maintainers that help permanent teeth erupt in the right position.

By addressing jaw alignment and spacing issues during growth, we can often prevent the need for extractions or surgery later. This proactive approach promotes balance, comfort, and long-term oral health.

Supporting Airway Health in Children

As orthodontists, we play an important role in recognising airway concerns that can affect a child’s breathing and development. Restricted airways may contribute to issues such as mouth breathing, snoring, or poor sleep quality.

At Adelaide Orthodontics, we carefully assess each child’s facial structure and breathing patterns during their evaluation. When necessary, Dr Sven will collaborate with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist to ensure your child receives the right care for their needs.

By identifying and addressing airway issues early, we help children achieve not only healthy smiles but also improved overall wellbeing.
